The information in the LGPS guide (PDF 991KB - opens new window) is based on the new Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations (effective from 1 April 2008) and other relevant legislation. It applies to individuals who are contributing members of the Local Government Pension Scheme on 1 April 2008 or who have since joined the Scheme. The rights of members who retired before that date with immediate payment of benefits or a preserved pension entitlement are those in force at their date of their retirement. The guide was up-to-date at the time of publication at April 2008. It is for general use and cannot cover every personal circumstance nor does it cover specific protected rights that apply to a very limited number of employees. In the event of any dispute over your pension benefits, the appropriate legislation will prevail as this booklet does not confer any contractual or statutory rights and is provided for information purposes only.
The guide explains the benefits available to you when you join the Local Government Pension Scheme. It describes how the Scheme works, what it costs to join and the financial protection that it offers to you and your family.
